Northwoods Organic Produce is a remarkable example of what can happen when vision, diversity, and commitment converge. David Massey, who worked as a Technical Manager at H. B. Fuller for 30 years until his retirement in 1998, has also been an organic gardener for 40 years. His farm, Northwoods Organic Produce, consists of land in two different locations - three acres in White Bear Lake, and 640 acres near Pequot Lakes in Cass County. David has farmed in White Bear Lake since 1990, growing heirloom vegetables in raised beds and a small greenhouse. He bought the Cass County land - which consists of forest, wetland, and 80 acres of agricultural land - in 1969, and since 1992 has grown squash, potatoes, onions, asparagus, leeks, garlic, and kale on approximately four acres.
David Massey has made the journey from the laboratory to the land, and now commits his energy to growing non-genetically modified foods. Ever the researcher, he loves to experiment and try new varieties of heirloom seeds. He participates in seed savers' exchanges in Decorah, Iowa, and Toronto, Canada. David has been recognized for his excellent pest management techniques, his use of organic nutrient cycles, good soil and water conservation practices, and concern for wildlife habitat.
David sees diversity as the strength of his farm. He farms creatively, always trying to do things better. He uses hoop houses to extend his growing season by six weeks in the spring, and up to two months in the fall. He mills his own flour to make "Farmer Dave's Pancake Mix." He also grows specialty items such as herbs and stevia, a popular sugar replacement. He finds that Food Alliance Midwest certification helps him to effectively market his products, as well as increases his credibility with customers.
